¡Hola mis amigos y mi famila!
I have been in Cuernavaca for a little over 24 hours
and I already love it. It is beautiful here and I love
my host family. I moved to Chicago this past monday,
met my 6 new housemates and then we flew to Mexico on
Thursday. Emily and I are staying with Nettie
Sandervol and her husband. She has two sons and a
duaghter, two of which teach at the school where we
take language classes. I am lucky because the school
is practically in around the corner from my house. The
house is very nice and we have a beautiful view from
our bedroom window. This morning we went for language
tests and then we took a tour of el centro and had
spaghetti for lunch (italian style!). Benni, the wife
of the school owner is from Kansas and her food is to
die for. there is so much about this culture that i
love and i see the same thing right back in my
neighborhood in Chicago, Little Village (La Villita).
I´m at an internet cafe right now but across the street
there is a taqueria which is selling ticherones (get
ready for this...ticherones are fried pig skins that
smell so good you could almost forget what they´re made of).
Meals are very interesting here. I eat desayuno
(breakfast) at 7:10, a light snack at 11am, comida
(lunch) at 3pm and la cena (dinner) at 8-8:30pm. My
stomach and body are still adjusting to the meal
times. plas, i have to remember not to drink or brush
my teeth with the tap water (not easy for a scatterbrained
person like myself as my el salvador companions can attest to).
and before you think that i have it nice and easy
being here, let me just say that it is exhausting to
constantly be focusing on what people are saying so
that you can understand them and also thinking about
what you´re going to say. I got a little dehydrated
this morning and got so frustrated during comida
because i was having a hard time understanding
anything. of course, we haven´t started classes yet so
i am hoping that my español will be much improved by
next week. well, la cena is going to start soon so i
have to get back to mi casa. Feel free to email me
down here is you want...I´m going to try to check it
every other day.
